A Physicist Reason to Believe in God
Are science and faith compatible? This is a common question often asked after taking one science class in high school and learning about what seemed to be competing models; “In the beginning” vs. the Big Bang Theory, Miller-Urey’s random chance vs. intelligent design. But upon further investigation, there is compelling evidence that suggests that rather than opposed or incompatible, science and faith can actually coexist and even augment one another.
Dr. Brian Miller (B.S., MIT; Ph.D., Duke), Discovery Institute Senior Fellow and Research Coordinator, came to UCSB to give a special presentation on a physicist’s reasons to believe in God. The presentation explored the intersection of science and faith, examining how the laws of physics and the complexity of the universe point toward a divine Creator. Aside from the presentation, Dr. Miller also came to promote a new movie that he’s a part of called The Story of Everything, which is a film exploring how the cosmos reveals the intelligent design behind our universe.
Dr. Miller began the presentation talking about cosmology and the origin of the universe, touching upon the different theories scientists throughout history came up with and most recently the Big Bang Theory. He then went into the Fine-Tuning of the Universe, which is this idea that the parameters of our universe, from gravity to entropy, have been so finely tuned and constrained that even a slight deviation from its tuning will cause the universe to be life-prohibiting. Some parameters would have to be tuned to 10^123. And it’s not just the parameters themselves—even the specific processes on Earth and its ecology must work precisely for life to be possible on our planet! Finally, Dr. Miller talked about the origin of life and the complexity of the creation/origin of life in comparison to simplicity that might have been assumed through the Miller-Urey experiment and others. His conclusion from his presentation was that when you look at nature, the laws of physics, our planet and life it all points to intelligent design or a Creator behind our universe, we are not an accident and we’re created for a purpose.
After his presentation, Dr. Miller held an open Q&A session where UCSB students got to ask any questions they might have ranging from questions related to the material presented to questions about the Christianity to questions about Dr. Miller’s personal story with the Christian faith as a physicist.
Personally for me, I was thankful for this presentation because as someone that grew up in church, I never thought that there was an intersection between faith and science, let alone support, I thought they were in two different realms. As I took different science classes in high school, my position on Christianity changed, seeing science as more reasonable and faith as illogical only to be believed by the uneducated, ultimately leaving the church. But as I entered college and got to investigate Christianity's claims and arguments myself, especially with regards to how it intersects with science, I was convinced of its claims and made a salvation decision and presentations such as these remind me that there is solid evidence and arguments that support Christianity and its claims, that are believed by well-educated, logical people.
Whether you’re a Christian or a seeker or somewhere in between, I encourage you to investigate the claims of Christianity yourself and see that there exists solid, logical, evidence for it!
